Painting in Canberra
Inside, you can paint any month of the year. Outside, Canberra gives you a window — and the reason a painter can't start your exterior in July isn't that they don't want the work.
What gets posted
Interior repaint
Whole house or a few rooms. Cheapest and best done empty — between tenants, before you move in, or while you're away.
Exterior repaint
Weatherboard, render, fibro or brick. Prep is most of the job and most of the price.
Roof coating
Cleaning, repointing and coating a tile roof. That's a specialist job, not a painter's sideline, and it's worth checking the roof actually needs it.
Single rooms and ceilings
One bedroom, a stained ceiling after a leak, a feature wall. Small enough that travel and setup are a real part of the cost.
New work
Painting after a reno or extension. Different from a repaint — new plaster needs sealing first.
Fences and decks
Staining or oiling timber. Usually a separate line from the house.
Where painting quotes really differ
Two quotes on the same house can be thousands apart and both be honest. This is almost always where the difference sits.
- How many coats, and whether an undercoat's included. Two topcoats over a proper undercoat is a different job from one coat over the old colour.
- Preparation. Sanding, filling, sugar soap, caulking gaps, priming bare timber. On an exterior that can be more than half the labour.
- Paint quality. There's a real difference between trade-grade and premium lines, and in this climate the exterior product matters.
- Colour change. Going from dark to light, or burying a strong colour, adds coats.
- Access. Two-storey, steep block, or a wall you can't get a ladder to means scaffold, and scaffold is a real cost line.
- What's included. Doors, frames, skirting, cornice, cupboard fronts — ask which of these are in and which are extra, because that's where quotes quietly diverge.
What to tell us
- Inside or outside, and how many rooms or which walls.
- Single or double storey, and whether the block slopes. Plenty of them do out through Tuggers.
- Wall type outside — weatherboard, render, brick, cladding.
- Current condition. Peeling, chalky, mouldy in the shaded corners, or just tired.
- Furnished or empty, and whether anyone's living there while the work's on.
- Photos. For an exterior, one of each side of the house tells a painter more than any description will.
